Sustainability & Social Responsibility

Protecting the environment by enhancing biodiversity within our natural spaces is extremely important here at Birmingham Newman University.

With existing and new developments, throughout the campus, appropriate management works to protect the variety of habitats and species from any harm.

“We take a direct responsibility when it comes to the environment as we realise the impacts our activities and work can have, be that positive or negative. So, we ensure that we incorporate environmental sustainability in all departments.”

Lucy Clarke, Environmental Advisor

Our initiatives

  • We produce nearly 20% of our own energy through our solar panels
  • ISO14001 Environmental accredited
  • ISO50001 Energy accredited
  • IT equipment is recycled and utilised across campus to maximise use

Environmental Policies

Access our Environmental Policies including details about our waste strategy, travel plan, impact risk register, disaster recovery plan and environmental policy.

We all work together to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste. Reusing our waste is top priority, giving old items another life by gifting them to charity of staff/students.

Embedding sustainability at every level here at Newman, is extremely important, as each one of us has a responsibility to protect our natural environment.

Whether that is integrating the SDGs into our teaching or organising ‘Green’ events for staff and students to take part in.

Transparency is crucial so the public and stakeholders are aware of the progress and work we are doing for sustainability.

We work alongside our staff, students and partners to ensure that sustainability sweeps throughout the whole campus.

Green Week

Green Week is our University’s annual hub for sustainability initiatives and eco-conscious innovation.

This flagship event reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development, offering a dynamic programme of activities for students and staff.

What to Expect

Green Week is designed to inspire practical action and foster a culture of sustainability across campus. Highlights include:

  • Reconnect with Nature: Guided environmental walks and exclusive rooftop tours showcasing our green initiatives.
  • Swap Shops: Reduce waste and embrace reuse by exchanging clothing, books, and household items—no money required.

  • Plant-Based Catering: Enjoy sustainable menus at Bistro 32, complete with recipes and Fairtrade products.
  • Interactive Competitions & Displays: Participate in our “Guess the Solar Generation” challenge and explore resources at pop-up stands in the Atrium.

Why It Matters

Green Week celebrates the progress we’ve made in reducing carbon emissions and improving biodiversity, while setting the stage for future projects in energy efficiency and landscaping. As Paul Dean, Director of Estates, notes:

“Green Week allows both our students and staff to engage with a variety of sustainable and green events and activities here on campus. It celebrates the improvements we’ve made and looks ahead to ambitious plans for the year ahead.”
