Green Week 2026, held from 23 to 27 February, brought Birmingham Newman together for a vibrant celebration of sustainability, wellbeing, and environmental action.
The campus buzzed with activity throughout the week, offering staff, students, and community partners the chance to get hands‑on, learn something new, and contribute to making our university a greener place.
A week of highlights
Monday: Creative Starts and Sustainable Travel
We kicked things off with garden decoration making in the Atrium, where students joined the Students’ Union to craft colourful additions for our green spaces. Meanwhile, Transport for West Midlands were on campus sharing practical advice on sustainable travel choices and local transport options.
Tuesday: Nature and Community Connections
Tuesday took participants outdoors for a bird‑bingo nature walk, encouraging everyone to slow down and reconnect with campus wildlife. Indoors, our Visitor Exhibition brought together local organisations including Birmingham Friends of the Earth, Biffa, and community police officers—offering insights into local environmental action and how our community can get involved.
Wednesday: Growing our Spaces
Midweek energy culminated in a garden‑terrace planting session, where volunteers helped refresh and enhance Newman’s outdoor spaces. Eco Birmingham joined us on campus, and our “Cuppa and Chat” event created a relaxed space for conversations about local sustainability initiatives.
Thursday: Second‑Hand Style and Campus Spirit
On Thursday, the Atrium played host to charity‑shop stalls promoting reuse and sustainable fashion. Birmingham Newman’s own stall added to the positive buzz, offering freebies and encouraging further engagement with our sustainability efforts.
Friday: A Calming Close
We ended Green Week on a restorative note. “Green Yoga” welcomed participants into a gentle session focused on wellbeing and mindfulness. Later, a film screening drew our community together for an environmentally themed viewing, and excitement grew as the winner of the Green Week photography competition was announced.
