Research

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), Birmingham Newman University more than doubled its staff submission compared to its REF debut in 2014 – an affirmation of our growing research culture.

Every subject area submitted was recognised for a high proportion of work deemed internationally significant, with five disciplines – Education, History, Sport, Social Work and Social Policy, and English – achieving the highest accolade of world-leading quality.

Research is not only central to our academic mission – it is integral to our identity. At Birmingham Newman, undergraduate students benefit directly from being taught by research-active staff who are deeply engaged in generating and disseminating new knowledge. This scholarly engagement enriches the learning environment and fosters a culture of curiosity and critical inquiry.

Inspired by the intellectual legacy of Saint John Henry Newman, our university nurtures a vibrant scholarly community. We are committed to supporting researchers at every stage of their academic journey – from emerging scholars embarking on doctoral study to established academics shaping their fields. This commitment is embedded in our research strategy, which prioritises mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the pursuit of research that makes a meaningful contribution to society.
