Choosing to study a PGCE in Secondary Education is your first step to inspiring children in learning about their world, and at Birmingham Newman University, we would love to support you in joining the profession.

Birmingham Newman Direct Online is a joint venture with our Catholic school-based partners. Placements will be in at least two schools complemented with fully online academic study.

The course programme is designed to prepare trainees for teaching within their subject, incorporating both academic and school-based modules. Trainees are given the opportunity to immerse themselves fully into school life from the start of the course.

The University modules are underpinned by four themes:

  • Role of the Teacher
  • Learning, Teaching and Assessment
  • Adaptive Practice
  • Understanding and Managing Behaviours

Additional subject knowledge and subject pedagogy will be delivered by school and university experts.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is attained by completing two level 7 modules worth 30 credits each. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is attained by trainees successfully completing school experience within their school settings and evidencing their progress.

As part of the programme, trainees will also take part in four intensive training and practice weeks, designed to further their understanding, knowledge and practice in key areas of secondary education. The course offers a wide range of support for trainees as well as training input from: Our school-based teams fully support trainees from their initial enquiries into teacher training right through to successful completion of the course and gaining employment;

Trainees are recruited through a rigorous selection process. We consider academic qualifications and the personal statement to decide whether to offer an interview.

Suitable applicants are then invited to an online university interview led by two people: a university subject tutor and a member of the school-based Team. Further information about the interview will be shared at this stage.

Following the interview, the school-based team will contact applicants within one working day to let them know the outcome of their interview and offer them feedback.

You will be able to select a preferred placement school, but there is no guarantee you will be placed in the school you have chosen. The training provider will contact you to discuss your choice to help them select a location that suits you. Find out more about how school placements work.

Our online programme is delivered in partnership with two lead providers:
