Our Philosophy, Religion and Ethics degree invites you to examine how humans dream, hope and respond to challenges—and how these experiences influence society. This full-time, three-year course is designed for anyone who wants to understand philosophy, theology, belief systems, and their impact on culture and community.

Whether you’re new to the subject or continuing your studies, you’ll find a supportive environment that values your perspective and encourages critical thinking. Together, we’ll explore real-life case studies, helping you build confidence and develop the skills to interpret, analyse and apply ideas in meaningful ways.

What does this course cover?
In the first year you’ll explore political philosophy, ethics, and the philosophy of religion. You’ll also see how different religious traditions relate to their sources of authority and their pasts. In the second year, you will deepen your subject knowledge with modules focussed on the real-world impact of philosophy and religion. The final year gives you greater scope to pursue your own interests, supported by the experienced and empathetic teaching team. In this course, you will have the opportunity to study some the most well-known philosophical and theological thinkers like Plato, Kant, and John Stuart Mill, but also other perspectives like Indigenous philosophies.

At all levels, learning about the subject is boosted by a curriculum designed to help you understand and work alongside the technology of the future. Key learning takes place through discussion and debate, often involving group work. In some classes, you will have the opportunity to work with students from other subject areas, giving you a wider perspective on the key questions facing human beings.

How will I be assessed?
There are no formal written examinations. Assessment will usually look like putting together a portfolio of tasks responding to problems set in class or that are based in real world situations. You’ll often work in groups to discuss these problems, but your portfolio work will reflect your own learning. In some cases, your assessment may include one-to-one discussions with teaching staff. In all cases, the assessment will always be matched to the learning you’ve done in class. You’ll be supported by a wide team of people to help you achieve your potential.

Entry requirements

We welcome students from all backgrounds and accept a wide range of qualifications. If yours aren’t listed, don’t worry – our Admissions Team can help you explore your options. See full entry requirements.

A-Level: Grade profile of BBC or 112 UCAS Tariff Points.
BTEC: Grade profile of DMM. This can be achieved from either an Extended National Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
T-levels: A T-level with an overall Merit grade.

If English is not your first language, you must have the following IELTS score:
Foundation courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 5.5 IELTS with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
Undergraduate courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component. Other English language qualifications are also accepted.

Course fees

The tuition fee for academic year 2025/26 is: £9,535

Fees for the 2026/27 academic year are subject to change and will be published here on 9 February 2026.

Additional costs

The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
