What does this course cover?
You will begin by studying the foundations of English law, including Contract Law, Criminal Law, Tort Law, Public Law and Equity and Trusts. From the end of your first year, you will specialise in legal practice through modules such as Family Law, Employment Law and Business Law. The course also includes areas like Immigration and Asylum Law, Medical Law and Ethics, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars and practical workshops, with a strong emphasis on legal research, advocacy and negotiation.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is designed to reflect the demands of legal study and professional preparation. You will complete coursework including written assignments, case analyses, oral presentations and simulated legal tasks such as advocacy and negotiation. There are no formal written exams. Instead, the course uses continuous assessment to help you demonstrate your understanding, apply legal principles and develop the skills needed for legal and professional environments. Feedback is developmental and designed to support your progress throughout the degree.

Entry requirements

• A-Level: Grade profile of BBC or 112 UCAS Tariff Points.
• BTEC: Grade profile of DMM. This can be achieved from either an Extended National Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
• T-levels: A T-level with an overall Merit grade.

If English is not your first language, you must have the following IELTS score:
· Foundation courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 5.5 IELTS with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
· Undergraduate courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
Other English language qualifications are also accepted. Please contact admissions for further information.

Course modules

Introduction to Law
20 Credits (Compulsory)

What is the Law? What are its sources. What are its institutions? How does it function. What works well and what requires further development and why? What changes would you introduce?

Criminal Law
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module explores general principles of criminal liability, the law relating to various offences, defences and common law development through case law. It explores criminal conduct, prosecution, sentencing and justice through an analysis of seminal decided cases.

Tort Law
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module will introduce students to the objective of the tort system and basic principles of liability underpinning tort law to consider some of the various interests that are protected. The module will explore the acts and omissions that give rise to liability and the type of harm which is actionable and for which compensation can be sought. The module deals with issues of caution and fault within particular types of action in tort, and considers the role of policy in relation to this area of law. The module also considers briefly the relevance of different modes of liability, including strict liability, vicarious liability and contributory negligence, as well as defences, and some of the potential remedies available to an action in tort.

Legal Skills
20 Credits (Compulsory)

Examines a breadth of legal skills including legal research, legal referencing, legal databases, case law analysis, academic writing, legal problem solving, professional conduct and practice. This module lays the foundation of academic success in subsequent levels of study.

Contract Law
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of contract law. The module will explore the formation, performance, and enforcement of contracts and remedies for breach of contract. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the legal rules governing contractual relationships and the ability to apply these rules in practical scenarios.

Public Law
20 Credits (Compulsory)

What are the Constitutional Laws and the Administrative Laws of the United Kingdom under the Parliamentary Democracy system that recognizes the Sovereignty of Parliament and an unwritten constitution. How does this all work? What works well and what requires further development and why? What changes would you introduce?

Course fees

The tuition fee for academic year 2026/27 is: £9,790. Tuition fees for courses starting April to May 2026, fall within the 2025/26 academic cycle.

Graduates of the Law with Legal Practice LLB (Hons) are well-prepared for careers in legal services, public administration, business or the third sector. The degree meets the academic stage of training for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination and supports progression into Bar training or postgraduate study. You will be equipped to contribute to legal decision-making, policy development and client advocacy. Accreditations and exemptions

The Law with Legal Practice LLB (Hons) is a qualifying law degree awarded by Birmingham Newman University. It is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board as meeting the academic stage of legal training. While the course does not offer exemptions from other professional bodies, it provides a strong foundation for further study or qualification routes such as the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar training. You will graduate with the academic and practical grounding to pursue a wide range of legal and professional careers.
