MSc Integrative Psychotherapy

The MSc Integrative Psychotherapy at Birmingham Newman University is a part-time, four-year course designed for those ready to train as UKCP-registered psychotherapists. You will explore a range of therapeutic approaches, including gestalt, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural models, all integrated through a relational lens. The curriculum also covers human development, mental health, ethics and research, encouraging you to think critically and reflectively. From your second year, you will begin a supervised clinical placement, completing at least 450 hours of client work alongside regular supervision and personal therapy. Learning is delivered through in-person teaching, independent study and clinical practice, designed to support your development at every stage.

Assessment on the MSc Integrative Psychotherapy is designed to support your growth as a reflective, ethical and capable practitioner. You will complete a range of written and practical tasks, including case studies, process reports, reflective essays and presentations. These activities are closely linked to your clinical placement and personal development, helping you apply theory and deepen your understanding. In your final year, you will complete a research project that allows you to explore a topic of personal or professional relevance in greater depth. The focus throughout is on building confidence, insight and professional integrity.

We welcome students from all backgrounds and accept a wide range of qualifications. If yours aren’t listed, don’t worry – our Admissions Team can help you explore your options. See full entry requirements.

• A relevant honours degree, 2:2 or above.
• Applicants will usually have completed a face-to-face level 3 qualification in counselling skills.
• Experience of supporting individuals in a professional, voluntary or personal capacity is usually also required.

If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 6.5, with no element below 6.0. (Other English language qualifications are also accepted. Please contact admissions for further information).

Consideration will be given to applicants with lower grade in qualifications (e.g. a 3rd class degree or non-honours degree) who have a relevant range of post study professional experience. Professional experience will be considered by the programme leader in conjunction with the quality office on an individual basis.

Placement Information

Throughout your MSc Integrative Psychotherapy course, you will engage in supervised clinical placements that are carefully integrated with your academic learning. From your second year, you will begin working directly with clients in real-world settings, completing a minimum of 450 hours of client work. These experiences are supported by regular clinical supervision and personal therapy, helping you reflect on your development and deepen your therapeutic insight. You will be guided by experienced professionals and supported by university staff, with progress monitored through structured reflection and assessment. These opportunities are designed to help you apply theory to practice and grow into a confident, ethical and relationally aware psychotherapist.
