Here at Birmingham Newman, we are experts in inclusive teaching and learning practice, and we aim to provide a supportive learning environment on our MPH course that can help our students reach their full potential. This is why our MPH course is delivered face-to-face on our university campus, that overlooks the picturesque Bartley Reservoir. You will be supported in using our state of the art facilities and online learning environment, whilst benefiting from time in the classroom with our public health experts.

What does this course cover?
What You’ll Study and How You’ll Learn. You’ll explore five key themes: Health Inequalities and Social Justice, Epidemiology and Research Methods, Public Health Policy and Leadership, Health Promotion and Community Engagement, and Global and Environmental Health. Alongside core modules and a final research project, you’ll deepen your understanding of population health, data analysis, ethics and systems-level change. Learning goes beyond lectures and includes collaborative workshops, real-world case studies and opportunities to engage with local partners and experts by experience. Personalised academic support and mentoring will guide your development at every stage, helping you to build a confident, inclusive professional identity.

Assessment on the MPH is designed to reflect the realities of public health practice across diverse communities and systems. You will complete a range of tasks including written assignments, data analysis, presentations, case studies and a final dissertation. These methods allow you to explore epidemiology, health promotion, policy and leadership in depth, while applying theory to real-world challenges. Each element is supported by regular feedback and academic guidance, helping you refine your approach and grow as a confident, reflective public health practitioner.

Entry requirements

A relevant honours degree, 2:2 or above.

Specific GCSE requirements:

• GCSE/IGCSE English language and maths grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent

If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 6.5. (Other English language qualifications are also accepted. Please contact admissions for further information).

Consideration will be given to applicants with lower grade in qualifications (e.g. a 3rd class degree or non-honours degree) who have a relevant range of post study professional experience. Professional experience will be considered by the programme leader in conjunction with the quality office on an individual basis.

Non-Academic Requirements:

You may be called for an interview to discuss your application further.

Course fees

The tuition fee for academic year 2026/27 is: £9,500. Tuition fees for courses starting April to May 2026, fall within the 2025/26 academic cycle.

Course modules

Contemporary Public and Population Health (20 credits – compulsory)

This module covers the fundamental sociological and theoretical concepts that will equip you with the knowledge necessary to comprehend contemporary public health challenges. You will develop a critical understanding of the factors that influence health and well-being, which are central to the effective practice of public health. This will be achieved by examining topics including social policy, models and determinants of health as well as health inequalities. An emphasis on professionalism and continual personal development will enhance your future practice.

Improving Population Health (20 credits – compulsory)

This module will provide a critical understanding of key health promotion theories and strategies, as well as other key health improvement subjects including health needs assessment, clinical audit, clinical governance and health service commissioning.

Health Protection (20 credits – compulsory)

This module will enable students to develop a thorough understanding of the impact of communicable diseases and environmental hazards on population health. It comprehensively covers the primary control and preventive measures for specific communicable diseases. Additionally, it explores the principles and practices of surveillance and screening, while also highlighting the roles and responsibilities of public authorities. While much of the indicative content is focused on the UK, it also emphasises the influence of globalisation, international travel, and urbanisation on communicable disease patterns and the emergence of global infections. The subjects covered here will support other MPH modules such as Contemporary Public and Population Health and Improving Population Health.

Medical Statistics and Epidemiology (20 credits – compulsory)

This module covers the concept of epidemiology, its significance in public health, and the methods employed in epidemiological research. It provides a contemporary and global perspective on how these methods contribute to informed decision-making within the field of public health. Alongside these epidemiological principles, you will explore statistical methods and techniques and how they are used in the practice of public health. The topics covered here will support other MPH modules such as Research Methods and your Project.

Strategic Management and Planning (20 credits – compulsory)

This module introduces healthcare management, covering contemporary management theories, research methodologies, healthcare planning and effective leadership practices.This will allow you to understand organisations and critically develop your leadership skills in the field of public health. The module also includes an introduction to engaging with the media and health economics.

Research Methods (20 credits – compulsory)

This module will develop your critical understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods. You will also gain a critical grasp of important topics such as literature searching, reviewing, data analysis and ethics. This will equip you with the necessary skills to produce a feasible and ethically sound research proposal for your Project. The subjects covered here will support other MPH modules such as Medical Statistics and Epidemiology and your Project.

Project (60 credits – compulsory)

In this module you will design and carry out an original research study, on a topic of your choice that is relevant to Public Health. It is intended that the topic and methodology will be based on the research proposal that you completed for the Research Methods module. To develop and enhance your ability to work independently, the emphasis is on experiential learning during this module. Lectures and seminars will be provided for key topics and a range of learning resources will be accessible through relevant virtual learning platforms. You will be also supported by a supervisor, and you will be expected to engage in supervisor-directed and independent study.

Graduates are well suited to roles in the NHS, local authorities, charities and international organisations, with opportunities in health promotion, education, research, policy and community development. The programme also supports progression to doctoral study or specialist public health training.
