The PGCE Primary Physical Education (3–11) at Birmingham Newman University is a one-year, full-time postgraduate course designed for those passionate about teaching and movement. Through a blend of academic study and school-based training, you will explore inclusive teaching strategies, curriculum design and the role of PE in supporting whole-child development. What does this course cover?
What You’ll Study and How You’ll Learn. You will study core modules in professional practice, curriculum planning, child development and inclusive education, with a specialist focus on physical education. Topics include movement and motor skills, health and wellbeing, behaviour management and adaptive teaching. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, practical workshops and school placements, with input from experienced teachers and subject specialists. You will also engage with research and reflective practice, helping you evaluate your impact and refine your approach. Assessment is designed to reflect the realities of teaching and support your development as a reflective practitioner. There are no formal written exams; instead, assessment is continuous and personalised, allowing you to draw on your experience and apply theory to practice. You will receive regular tutorials and feedback to help you build academic confidence and professional insight. Each task is designed to support your growth and prepare you for a successful teaching career.

A relevant honours degree, 2:2 or above.

Specific GCSE requirements:

• GCSE/IGCSE English language and maths grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent
• GCSE/IGCSE science grade 9-4/A*-C or equivalent*

* Pass in a biology-focused module, e.g. anatomy and physiology, human biology, as part of a relevant Level 3 qualification is regarded as an equivalent for entrance.

If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 6.5, with no element below 6.0. (Other English language qualifications are also accepted. Please contact admissions for further information).

Consideration will be given to applicants with lower grade in qualifications (e.g. a 3rd class degree or non-honours degree) who have a relevant range of post study professional experience. Professional experience will be considered by the programme leader in conjunction with the quality office on an individual basis.

Non-Academic Requirements:

Success at Interview. The Admissions team will use the course entry requirements, as well as your personal statement, reference and any work experience information, to shortlist and invite successful candidates for interview. Candidates will be assessed at interview on their motivation and understanding of the role of a teacher.

DBS Clearance. Candidates must receive a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring System check prior to commencing the course.

Specialising in primary physical education
30 Credits (Compulsory)

This module aims to develop studentsÊ knowledge and understanding in primary Physical Education (PE) with a specific focus on subject leadership and professional development. Through taught seminars, practical workshops, tutorials and directed tasks (including fieldwork e.g. school based activities) students will develop a critical awareness of pedagogical practice and pertinent issues in primary PE. The module will provide the opportunity for students to identify and undertake an enquiry-based project that aims to address a current school need in primary PE. Students will demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and addressing an identified need, demonstrating an ability to communicate and build effective relationships with school-based colleagues. Their approach to enquiry and addressing the issue will be grounded in knowledge of leadership styles and behaviour change theory/models. Overall, this module will facilitate students in advancing their knowledge and understanding of primary PE in the context of effective subject leadership.

The theory and practice of learning and teaching
30 Credits (Compulsory)

This module provides opportunities for you as a trainee teacher to explore and understand in theoretical and practical terms the meaning of teaching and learning in the context of education and being a teacher. Education is an ever-changing environment and the desire for improvement is strong from all stakeholders. This module helps you to understand that engaging in professional development can positively impact the learning experience of your pupils. You will understand the holistic and positive role of a teacher and the practices and policies of the education framework in which you operate. Implicit in this will be the development of your understanding of your personal teacher identity and the impact on pupil outcomes. You will also have the opportunity to develop an understanding of how children learn and how this is organised, delivered and measured in primary schools. This module is informed by classroom-based evidence, research and theoretical and pedagogical underpinning and you will have the opportunity to establish a detailed understanding of a number of relevant issues directly affecting your teaching and your professional development.

Placement Information

Throughout your PGCE Primary Physical Education (3–11), you will complete practice-based learning in a primary school setting for at least two days or ten hours per week. These placements include a range of inclusive environments, with opportunities to teach across different key stages and support diverse learning needs. Placement activity begins early in the course and is closely integrated with your academic modules. You will be supported by school-based mentors and university tutors, with progress tracked through reflective journals and structured feedback. You will also engage with peers and professionals, helping you to build insight, confidence and a deeper understanding of inclusive physical education. These experiences are designed to help you apply theory to practice and grow into a capable and reflective practitioner.
