The PGCE Primary Physical Education (3–11) at Birmingham Newman University is a one-year, full-time postgraduate course designed for those passionate about teaching and movement. Explore How Practice Shapes Inclusive Education
Your learning will begin with modules in child development, pedagogy and professional values, followed by specialist study in physical education. You will explore how movement supports learning, how to adapt activities for different needs and how to create inclusive environments. Practical workshops, peer collaboration and school-based experiences help you develop skills in planning, assessment and behaviour management. You will also study research methods and reflective practice, enabling you to evaluate your teaching and contribute to improvements in your setting. Entry requirements

A relevant honours degree, 2:2 or above.
Specific GCSE requirements:
• GCSE/IGCSE English language and maths grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent
• GCSE/IGCSE science grade 9-4/A*-C or equivalent*
* Pass in a biology-focused module, e.g. anatomy and physiology, human biology, as part of a relevant Level 3 qualification is regarded as an equivalent for entrance.
If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 6.5, with no element below 6.0. (Other English language qualifications are also accepted. Please contact admissions for further information).
Consideration will be given to applicants with lower grade in qualifications (e.g. a 3rd class degree or non-honours degree) who have a relevant range of post study professional experience. Professional experience will be considered by the programme leader in conjunction with the quality office on an individual basis.
Non-Academic Requirements:
Success at Interview. The Admissions team will use the course entry requirements, as well as your personal statement, reference and any work experience information, to shortlist and invite successful candidates for interview. Candidates will be assessed at interview on their motivation and understanding of the role of a teacher.
DBS Clearance. Candidates must receive a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring System check prior to commencing the course.

Course fees
The tuition fee for academic year 2025/26 is: £9,535
Fees for the 2026/27 academic year are subject to change and will be published here on 9 February 2026.
Additional costs
The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Placement Information
Throughout your PGCE Primary Physical Education (3–11), you will complete practice-based learning in a primary school setting for at least two days or ten hours per week. These placements include a range of inclusive environments, with opportunities to teach across different key stages and support diverse learning needs. Placement activity begins early in the course and is closely integrated with your academic modules. You will be supported by school-based mentors and university tutors, with progress tracked through reflective journals and structured feedback. You will also engage with peers and professionals, helping you to build insight, confidence and a deeper understanding of inclusive physical education. These experiences are designed to help you apply theory to practice and grow into a capable and reflective practitioner.

Where This Course Can Take You. Graduates of this PGCE will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), enabling you to teach across the primary age range with a specialism in physical education. You will be equipped to work in mainstream schools, special education settings and community-based programmes. The course also supports progression into leadership roles, curriculum development and further study. You will benefit from the university’s Careers and Employability Service, which offers mentoring, networking and guidance on career pathways in education and beyond.
Accreditations and Exemptions
This PGCE is approved by Birmingham Newman University and leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The course is developed in collaboration with local schools and education providers, ensuring alignment with national standards and the needs of the children’s workforce. You will graduate with a recognised teaching qualification, prepared to deliver inclusive, ethical and effective education in primary school settings.
