In this module you will supported to understand how the principles and theories from physics, biomechanics and applied exercise science can be applied to physiotherapy practice. You will explore and learn about physical activity, exercise prescription and therapeutic skills such as functional rehabilitation, manual therapy (hands-on skills) and electrotherapy and how the application of these treatment options can result in physiological and structural change within the body. You will also focus the role of advice and on the biopsychosocial approach to rehabilitation and on what ?person centredÊ actually means. Throughout the module, you will develop your ability to select, plan, implement, manage and record a physiotherapy management programme aimed at the facilitation and restoration of movement and function safely and effectively. Case studies will be used throughout the module to support you in taking an holistic and evidenced based approach to rehabilitation for simple musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological conditions. Learning and teaching activities during this module may be supported by our “experts by experience” group (service users) through discussing their lived experiences of their condition. This module will introduce you to the structure of the human body (anatomy) and how the human body functions (physiology). You will be supported to understand the body systems and the processes that take place within the body which are key to maintaining the health and wellbeing of an individual. You will also study the adaptations of these body systems and structures to ageing, perceived threat (such as pain, infection, inflammation and trauma) and to a range of disease processes (pathophysiology). Through exploring the pathological changes that occur in certain diseases you will be able to identify clinical features commonly encountered in physiotherapy practice. You will also be encouraged to develop skills in communicating key knowledge related to the structure and function of the human body in health and disease to a given audience such as service users, carers or other health professionals. This will prepare you to be able to provide information that enables individuals to be centre in their care or, for example to educate others about a disease process. The focus during this module will be on the structure and functioning of the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems in health and disease. However the integration and interplay of other body systems will be addressed through case studies and simulation activities. You will be required to demonstrate your ability to work in a group to evidence the need for change and defend your position.

Practice partners, experts by experience and guest speakers may be used to facilitate critical discussions of patient complaints, never events and near misses, case studies and good practice examples to support you in linking theory with practice.

    </details><details name="module-year-3" class="wp-block-details is-layout-block is-icon-arrow" >

Practice Education Block – Level 6

        20 Credits
        (Compulsory)

This module consists of your two final six-week practice placements – Practice Placement 4 (PP4) and Practice Placement 5 (PP5) which take place in a practice environment with supervision by practice educator(s)/supervisor(s). This module contributes to the recommendation by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy that you must complete a minimum of 1000 hours of practice placement learning during your programme of study. The expectation is that you will use your experiences from previous modules and practice placements to further develop as a practitioner. You should be working towards becoming self-initiators, more autonomous whilst demonstrating the fundamental professional qualities and behaviour required of a healthcare professional. As in previous placements, you will be guided by a practice educator(s)/supervisor(s) who will support you in the development of your knowledge and skills. You be expected to demonstrate criticality in your practice and where opportunities arise be able to contribute to the profession via leadership, evaluating and improving services. As well as practice-based experience, experience may be gained in leadership, management and/or education based environments. During the placement you will be required to fulfil your duties and responsibilities in a professional, ethical, and moral manner as set down in the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (2022) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Code of Professional Values and Behaviour (2019).

    </details><details name="module-year-3" class="wp-block-details is-layout-block is-icon-arrow" >

     Transitioning to Professional Life

        20 Credits
        (Compulsory)

Moving into the role of a registered allied health professional (AHP) marks an important, and often challenging, transition along both a professional and personal journey. You will be encouraged to critically reflect upon the wide variety of career options open to you and develop your curriculum vitae and interview skills in preparation for following your desired career route. Through a series of guided workshops, you will explore content related to the pre preceptorship module including: positive appraisal of learning during challenging situations, personal wellbeing at work, everyday work, systems that shape everyday practice ethics, accountability, and decision-making, developing and working in an inclusive environment, building positive relationships and sustaining change and learning. Acknowledging the importance of education as a pillar of professional practice, you will develop skills in mentoring and coaching and reflect on your future role as a practice educator. Recognising your professional responsibilities to meet the requirements of the HCPC and accrediting body, you will develop a portfolio of evidence to support your transition to a registered professional. Using examples from practice, the value of reflective practice and the need to record the outcome of such reflection to support continuous improvement will be explored.
