Equality

We are a values-driven university and take our responsibility for equality and diversity very seriously overseen by the Equality and Diversity Committee which is chaired by the Vice Chancellor.  Equality is a key issue we are seeking to advance and we value the diversity of our staff and students and acknowledge the benefits that this brings to the University.  As an inclusive community we promote the values of social justice in our neighbouring communities, nationally and internationally.

Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 , supplemented by the Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) Regulations 2011, introduced a general Public Sector Equality Duty, which public bodies, including universities, have to meet. The general duty has three aims and requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • advance equality of opportunity between people from different groups. This involves considering the need to:
    • to remove or minimise disadvantages suffered by people due to their protected characteristic
    • meet the needs of people with protected characteristics
    • encourage people with protected characteristics to participate in public life or in other activities where their participation is low
  • foster good relations between persons who she a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it. This involves:
    • tackling prejudice
    • promoting understanding between people from different groups

The general duty is underpinned by specific duties. The specific duties aim to help public bodies perform better in meeting the general equality duty and require the University to publish:

Whilst we welcome the legislative protection relating to equality and diversity, Newman University values the process of respectful dialogue, and respects and encourages the individual integrity of everyone who is part of the life of Newman University.  Thus, in addition to working to create a community that positively welcomes diversity by aiming to embed equality and diversity into everything that we do.
