Newman University, Birmingham is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of its Dean for the Faculty of Education as Dr Lorraine Thomas.
Dr Thomas has worked at Newman University for 5 years yet has been in the education sector since 1991. Dr Thomas secured her first teaching post in Cartagena, Spain as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language before completing a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages and moving back to the West Midlands where she worked in a number of secondary schools for 14 years.
It was over these years that she achieved several regional and national awards for innovative practice, including the European Award for Languages. Positions held whilst in HE have included Director of Postgraduate and Professional Development Studies at the University of Wolverhampton; Head of Centre: Secondary and Post-compulsory initial teacher education (ITE) at the University of Worcester; and Principal Lecturer in Higher Education at the University of Worcester.
Dr Thomas then secured her post at Newman University as Associate Dean: Faculty of Education and was responsible for operational matters across the faculty. Dr Thomas has had a huge amount of success within the faculty, including leading a very successful Ofsted inspection and diversifying the faculty portfolio.
Through this role Dr Thomas has proved that she is able to promote a strong and positive external profile for the faculty and the university as a whole through effective engagement with external organisations, networks and stakeholders. It is with evidence such as this that Dr Thomas has proven she is the perfect candidate for Newman University’s Dean of the Faculty of Education.
Dr Thomas’s appointment comes after an extensive search and recruitment process led by Berwick Partners and after recently fulfilling the role of Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education for much of the year.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Scott Davidson commented “I am pleased to announce that Dr Lorraine Thomas has been appointed as Newman’s Dean of the Faculty of Education. Lorraine comes with a wealth of experience across the broad discipline of Education, and has in-depth knowledge of Initial Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development. She has already done much to forge new partnerships and to make ITE more sustainable in what have been difficult times. Everyone at Newman wishes her well in her new role.”
Dr Thomas commences her appointment with immediate effect, commenting “I am delighted to have been appointed as Newman’s Dean of the Faculty of Education. It is an honour to have been offered the position and I look forward to building on the superb work of our former Dean, Professor Stephen Rayner, following his retirement last year.”
