Sports Coaching student presents work at the House of Lords

A BSc Sport Coaching Science student from Birmingham Newman has recently been invited to the House of Lords to present work he contributes to through the national cricket charity Chance to Shine.
On 18 March, Zak attended the Chance to Shine Impact Report Launch, marking the release of the charity’s annual report highlighting the positive impact cricket continues to have on children and young people across the UK. Zak is featured in the report’s “Inspired by Cricket” section, recognising the value of his contribution and the difference his work is making.

Zak’s involvement with Chance to Shine is closely aligned with his academic studies, allowing him to put theory into practice through real‑world coaching and community engagement. His invitation to present at the House of Lords reflects the impact of this work and his growing role within the charity’s programmes.
Reflecting on the experience, Zak said:
“Being part of the launch gave me the chance to reflect on my own journey through the programme and the impact it has had on my development. Looking ahead, my plans are to graduate, gain further cricket coaching qualifications, and inspire more young people to enjoy the game.”
Zak’s journey demonstrates how Birmingham Newman students are making meaningful contributions beyond the lecture theatre, acting as ambassadors for the University while positively influencing communities nationwide.
