Kasim Yaqub Bashir Raja

Biography

Kasim is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing within the School of Nursing and Allied Health at Birmingham Newman University. Kasim is a qualified and registered Adult Nurse. Before joining Birmingham Newman University, Kasim was Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Wolverhampton. Kasim’s time at University of Wolverhampton involved predominantly working as the year 2 and year 3 BNurs programme lead, simulation placement lead and the level 6 practice module lead, along with other duties. Kasim completed his master’s degree and is completing his professional doctorate at the University of Wolverhampton with a keen interest in simulation and escape rooms. Kasim is an active researcher ensuring good quality education for nursing students. Kasim is always willing to learn and support individuals to develop self and others. He has published in nursing journals and is continuously working on completing research to improve nursing care and nursing education. Kasim is a fellow of Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) and has held the position of being a reviewer for the BMC (BioMed Central) Medical Education Journal. Kasim is a keen believer, promoter and advocate for student centred learning and student voice to enhance programmes to allow for effective nursing education to take place. Kasim was part of the University of Wolverhampton Quality Panel which involved various tasks to support the university. Kasim has also taken on the role of master of ceremonies during nursing events and the nursing graduation.

Kasim completed his nurse training at Birmingham City University. Kasim attained a first-class honours degree in Adult Nursing. Before moving into academia, Kasim worked in the hospital setting. This allowed him to attain experience and knowledge in various specialities such as: Hepatobiliary, Pancreatobiliary, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Urology and Emergency Nursing. Kasim was a casual worker and visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University teaching on the nursing programme.

Kasim has achieved many awards as Lecturer in Nursing, Kasim was recognised for going above and beyond, being an early career researcher and winning the faculty lecturer of the year award at the University of Wolverhampton, Students Union Awards, in 2024. Kasim has been a finalist for various other awards that he is immensely proud of. Kasim has ensured to recognise students during award events and has nominated students for the Student Nursing Times Awards regularly.

Kasim has an active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Kasim has membership with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and he is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).

Research Interests

Kasim has many research interests focusing on nursing care and nursing education, in particular, human factors, simulation-based education, optimal and suboptimal care. Kasim’s doctorate is focusing on simulated nursing escape rooms to emphasise the importance of key nursing skills during acute situations, as well as, ensuring students have fun, whilst learning. Kasim intends on introducing simulated nursing escape rooms into the curriculum upon completion of his doctoral studies. Kasim is focusing on mixed-methods design for his doctoral work.
