Welcome to Sport Coaching (BSc) at Birmingham Newman University.
The Sport & Health subject area at Birmingham Newman is an experienced and friendly community.
We know that the relationship you have with staff with make a big difference to your university experience. All staff are always keen to get to know you and your interests.
We work with lots of regional and national partners for applied work and research. This enhances the work we can all do in the laboratory and classroom – so please get to know them.
SPU414: Sport & Exercise Biomechanics
This module introduces human anatomy, function, and systems related to exercise. Using knowledge from physiology and biomechanics, this module is taught in our Human Performance Laboratory and uses lecture and practical sessions.
- 3 hours of in-person contact sessions per week.
SPU405: Pedagogy of PE & Coaching
This module focuses on the knowledge and practice related to Physical Education and Sports Coaching. You will have the opportunity to discuss the role of Physical Education teachers and sports coaches. Throughout the module, there will be opportunities to apply theoretical constructs to practical situations.
- 1 hour of in-person lecture per week plus 2 hours of in-person practical sessions fortnightly.
SPU417: Introduction to Sport & Exercise Psychology
This module will explore human psychology and its influence on participation and engagement in various physical activity contexts. We will use lectures and practical seminars to explore your experiences in sport and exercise.
- 3 hours of in-person contact sessions per week.
Welcome Week Services Fair – Your Chance to Meet the Teams
As part of your induction to Birmingham Newman University, our Services Fair is your opportunity to meet the teams who will support you throughout your studies and explore the services available to help you succeed.

You’re welcome to drop in and take part on any of the fair dates — it doesn’t have to be the day of your induction.
- Chat with Careers about your future plans, grab some sweets and an employability bag, and register on My Career for a chance to win a £25 Amazon voucher.
- Make a badge with our Environmental Officer, download the OurNewman app to spin the wheel and win a prize, and join the Library for Q&A activities and their Prize Every Time Lucky Dip.
- Advice & Wellbeing will be offering stress tests, sound therapy, and an Affirmation Station, while E-Learning invites you to take their “Who You Gonna Call?” quiz for a prize draw entry.
- Try the Sport team’s exercise bike challenge and visit the Chaplaincy to choose the “word of the day” and share some positivity.
And that’s just the start — there’ll be many more services, activities, and opportunities to explore each day of the fair. Come along, get involved, and make the most of what’s on offer!
The Disability & Inclusion team and the Advice & Wellbeing team will be holding drop-in sessions on campus from 15–19 September.
