Birmingham Newman Gains Prestigious Healthcare Chaplaincy Accreditation

Backs of student in lecture facing lecturers

Birmingham Newman University has become one of only seven higher education institutions to earn formal accreditation for its postgraduate Chaplaincy programmes from the Council for Professional Chaplains and Pastoral Carers (CPCPC).

Formerly the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy, CPCPC is the UK’s professional body for chaplaincy training and registration specifically in healthcare settings.

The University has seen two of its courses – Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy and Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric and Maternity Chaplaincy – receive this accreditation. Both are focused on helping students focus on how spiritual care and pastoral support can respond to the emotional, ethical and faith-based needs of individuals and communities. This new accreditation means that students who successfully complete their course and work in a healthcare setting qualify for professional registration with the CPCPC.

In their feedback, the CPCPC highlighted a number of Birmingham Newman’s strengths, including:

Helen Bardy, Senior Lecturer in Chaplaincy and Foundation Year, said: “As a University, we are delighted that the CPCPC have recognised the excellence of our teaching – especially in an area that means so much to the ethos of our community.”
