How to apply for accommodation

Applying for Accommodation

Prospective students

Applications for University accommodation for the 2026/27 academic year will open on 23 March 2026.

If Birmingham Newman is your firm choice, you will automatically receive an email with further information and a link to the accommodation application form once applications open. This is usually sent within 10 working days of your place becoming firm.

The application form is completed online and allows you to tell us about your room preferences, as well as any access or support requirements you may have. We offer a range of room types on campus, so this helps us match you with accommodation that suits you best.

Applications are considered in the order they are received, so we always recommend applying as early as possible once applications open.

The good news is that prospective students are guaranteed accommodation if they apply by 31 August 2026, so you can focus on preparing for university knowing your room on campus is secured.

Once your place at the University is confirmed and you have met any conditions of your offer, you will receive an accommodation confirmation email with details of your allocated room and information about the next steps, including moving in.

At that point, you will be asked to pay your accommodation deposit and complete your Licence to Occupy agreement, as well as set up your accommodation payment plan before the end of August.

Accommodation fees for 2026/27 will be confirmed shortly and published here once they are approved.

If you are offered a room but later decide that you no longer need it, please let the Accommodation Team know as soon as possible so we can offer the room to another student.

Returning students

Many students choose to live in University accommodation during their first year, as it’s a great way to meet new people, settle into university life, and make friends across different courses.

After that first year, it’s very common for students to move into private housing with friends they’ve met during halls or on their course. Because of this, and due to the size of our accommodation on campus, the number of rooms available for returning students is limited.

While we do accept some returning students, priority is normally given to those with specific accommodation requirements that have been discussed with relevant University support services.

If you are a returning student and thinking about living off campus, the Accommodation Team is always happy to offer advice and guidance on finding private accommodation in Birmingham.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Who gets priority for University accommodation?

New students joining Birmingham Newman University are prioritised for accommodation so they can settle into university life, meet new people and feel part of the community from the start of their course.

Returning students may also be considered for accommodation where they meet specific criteria or have particular support needs, but the number of rooms available beyond the first year is limited.

What is the accommodation guarantee for new students?

New students who apply for accommodation by 31 August 2026 are guaranteed a room in halls of residence, subject to availability of suitable room types.

Is accommodation available during Clearing?

While accommodation during Clearing cannot be guaranteed, we aim to keep a small number of rooms available for students who join the University through Clearing. More information will be shared closer to the Clearing period.

What happens after the first year in halls?

Most students live in University accommodation during their first year and then move into private housing with friends they have met at university. The Accommodation Team provides guidance and support to help students find suitable accommodation off campus, including advice on searching for properties, understanding tenancy agreements and living in shared housing.

We have created a detailed guide to private accommodation which contains lots of help and advice.

Is bedding included in my room?

Bedding, bathroom items and kitchen essentials are not included in your room. However, many students choose to pre-order these items, so everything is ready when they arrive.

You can order starter packs from UniKitOut and have them delivered directly to your room before you move in. Use code BNU10 to receive 10% off your order.
