What do I need to study History at university? 

To study History at Birmingham Newman University, you will typically need 112 UCAS points. We welcome applications from a wide range of educational and personal backgrounds, including mature learners and those with non-traditional qualifications. Foundation year routes are available for those who need additional preparation.

What do you study on a History degree? 

You will explore topics such as ancient Rome and Greece, early modern England, the Third Reich, global empires, social change and revolutionary ideas. Modules include ‘History Without Borders’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, with case studies ranging from punk culture to the legacies of slavery. You will also complete a final-year dissertation on a topic of your choice. 

How is the course assessed at university? 

Assessment is varied and includes essays, book reviews, research reports, presentations and a final-year dissertation. You will have opportunities to negotiate your own questions and topics, with regular feedback and one-to-one support to help you grow in confidence and academic independence. 

How much does the degree cost and what funding can I get? 

For UK students, tuition fees are £9,535 per year for 2025-26. Fees are reviewed annually and may increase in line with inflation. Birmingham Newman University offers financial support including bursaries, scholarships and flexible payment plans. No fees are paid upfront, and repayments begin only once you earn over £25,000 per year. International students should check the university’s website for current fees and scholarship opportunities.
