Social Media Community Guidelines
Here at Birmingham Newman University, we believe that everyone has a valuable contribution to make to our community – and we want to encourage people to join our conversations.
However, we’re clear that our social media should reflect our community’s values in our Vision & Strategy: where we treat each and every person with dignity and respect. Our aim is to welcome constructive, informative discussions about teaching, research, and more.
So, we ask that anyone engaging with our social media channels ensures their messages, comments, and tags:
- Comply with the social media platform’s terms and conditions
- Are relevant to the University, on topic, and not spam
- Do not include explicit language, slurs, swearing, or other forms of hate speech
- Do not contain any material that is violent, unlawful or threatening
- Are not harassing, bullying, or malicious towards an individual or group
- Are not intentionally misleading, inaccurate, or deceptive
- Are not trolling or sharing deliberately disruptive comments
- Respect academic freedom of speech for all
- Do not advertise services, products, or commercial opportunities outside of the University
- Do not breach any copyright or intellectual property rights
- Do not share private and/or personal individuals without an individuals’ consent, sometimes known as doxxing
- Do not encourage, participate in, or link to illegal activity
- Respect the rights of everyone in our community, including gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion or any of the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010.
While we are not responsible for content shared by individuals as comments, messages, or tags on our social media channels, we do monitor and moderate the University’s social media pages.
Where we find content that raises concern, we will take action to report or remove it. This includes, but isn’t limited to, hiding or deleting comments, reporting content to the platform, and blocking users who repeatedly share harmful material.
If you have questions about these guidelines or would like to provide feedback on Birmingham Newman’s social media, you can contact our team at socialmedia@newman.ac.uk.
