In our BSc Sports and Exercise Therapy programme students learn an extensive range of therapeutic techniques and modalities, including rehabilitation exercises, manual therapy, taping, and injury assessment. Students engage in hands-on, practical learning experiences from the outset. Clinical placements in both sporting contexts and private clinical settings offer invaluable real-world exposure. *Due to Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRB) stipulations on attendance and competencies that are required to be covered across the degree, the university is unfortunately unable to offer Top Up or advanced entry routes to this course.

Explore the Science Behind Clinical Skills, Exercise, Health and Human Performance

You will explore key themes across sports and exercise therapy, including training adaptation, injury prevention, musculoskeletal anatomy, clinical assessment, psychology, and sports trauma management.. Through practical workshops, collaborative projects and applied research, you will investigate real-world challenges and develop inclusive approaches to injury recovery and performance. You will also examine professional frameworks such as safeguarding, medicolegal responsibilities, health, safety and hygiene in clinical practice, gaining a clear understanding of how sports and exercise therapy is delivered in practice. The course requires you to complete a 200-hour placement in your final year of study. Prior to your final year of study work-related learning is embedded throughout, helping you prepare for you rfinal year of study and future roles in sports and exercise therapy, exercise rehabilitation, consultancy, health support or sports performance. .

Exploring sport, exercise, and physical activity
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module is focuses on exploring sport, exercise, physical activity and coaching. Introducing and developing the skills you need to be successful in Higher Education. The module will allow you the opportunity to reflect on your skills and development needs, as well as enhancing your knowledge and skills in this area.

Introduction to exercise physiology
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module aims to develop knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, systems and their responses to exercise both acute and chronic from a physiological perspective. You will learn about human anatomy, function, systems in relation to both performance and health. This will include applied work in a laboratory environment to develop proficiency in measurements methods related to exercise physiology.

Fundamentals of musculoskeletal anatomy
20 Credits (Compulsory)

The module explores the theoretical and practical elements of fundamental musculoskeletal anatomy. Students will develop and demonstrate the practical skills to apply their anatomical knowledge in a clinical setting.

Introduction to sport & exercise biomechanics
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module aims to develop knowledge of anatomy and function of the musculoskeletal system during movement and apply them to exercise performance and injury. Students will also be introduced to biomechanical principles underpinning the practical analysis of human movement, considering the role of analysis in sport and in movement. It will serve to widen the students’ knowledge base and will provide a firm basis for working at a higher level in the discipline of sport and exercise biomechanics. Relevant risk assessment and health and safety protocols will be adhered to within the human performance laboratory.

Introduction to strength and conditioning
20 Credits (Compulsory)

The module looks to develop students understanding and knowledge of key training principles that underpin physical preparation for training and injury prevention. Students will develop the theory and practical skills to apply training principles to healthy individuals.

Soft tissue therapy
20 Credits (Compulsory)

Be able to understand and apply a variety of soft tissue therapy techniques and remedial methods to various muscles in the body underpinned by anatomical understanding. Be able to perform a basic subjective and objective assessment with the understanding of treatment indications, contraindications and precautions. Be able to maintain health and safety within a clinical environment. Understand hot and cold therapy and how to effectively apply them safely.

Placement Information

To graduate with a BSc Hons Sports and Exercise Therapy degree accredited by the Society of Sport Therapists, students must attend 80% of all practical lectures, complete 200 hours of clinical placement in your final year of study, and complete and pass a research project. The degree supports placement preparation by offering a clinical preparation module where students will offer a sports massage service across semester 1 and 2 to students, staff, and members of the community. You will be guided by experienced practitioners and supported by university staff with strong industry connections, with progress monitored through structured assessment tools. You will also engage with clients, athletes and professionals from across the sector, helping you to build insight, confidence and a deeper understanding of sports and exercise therapy in practice. These placements are designed to help you apply theory to real-life scenarios and grow into a capable and reflective practitioner.

This course is aligned with professional standards and is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists. To graduate with a professionally recognised degree, you must attend at least 80 percent of all practical lectures, complete 200 hours of clinical placement, and successfully complete a research project. DBS: £66.50 – £72.50 (compulsory, and to be obtained by the end of the 1st year of study)

Uniform: Branded Nike uniform is provided for this course; however, Birmingham Newman University reserves the right to make a charge.

1st Year of Study: Level 4 Sports Massage Training Qualification (optional), £495 (discounted from £1269)

2nd Year of Study: Inhouse Athletic Taping Course, no additional cost.

3rd Year of Study: L3 Emergency First Aid in Football (optional), £225.00
