The foundation year provides an alternative route to studying Business and Human Resource Management for those unable to meet the traditional entry requirements for this degree programme.
What is the Foundation Year?
The Foundation Year at Birmingham Newman University is the first year of a four year degree. It is designed for students who do not have the qualifications or experience for direct entry onto a three-year undergraduate programme.

The integrated foundation year focuses on helping you think critically and feel confident in your studies. It begins with an exploration of how you learn, and gives you the space to learn in your own way.
The goal of the Foundation Year is not just to get you ready for your next year of studies but to make sure you feel connected to your chosen subject and to the university community. You’ll explore interesting topics like identity, inequality, and think about what it means to be human in a digital world.
The combination of seminar discussions, active workshops, online activities and one-to-one support will enable you to develop the skills you’ll need to succeed in the rest of your degree.

UK home students All students apply through UCAS. Students will ideally require 48 UCAS points to access the programme. Those with significant work and life experience of a complexity that demonstrates an aptitude to study at degree level, but with no formal qualifications, will also be favourably considered. Different degree pathway options available at the end of the foundation year may have different additional entry requirements. The full-time course fee, for UK home students, for September 2025 is: £9,535
Additional Costs
The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Placement Information
Throughout your BSc (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management course, you will engage with practical opportunities across Birmingham, the West Midlands and surrounding areas. These experiences are carefully integrated with your academic modules to support your development. You will be guided by experienced professionals and supported by university staff, with progress monitored through structured reflection and assessment. You will also interact with HR practitioners, business leaders and organisational teams, helping you to build insight, confidence and a deeper understanding of inclusive and strategic practice. These opportunities are designed to help you apply theory to real-life scenarios and grow into a capable and reflective graduate.

Where This Course Can Take You. Graduates of this degree are well-prepared for roles in HR, people management, organisational development and/or consultancy. The course also supports progression into postgraduate study or professional training. You will be equipped to contribute confidently to strategic planning, ethical decision-making and inclusive workplace culture. Alumni have gone on to work in sectors including healthcare, education, retail and the public sector, applying their skills in both operational and strategic roles.
Accreditations and Exemptions
This degree is academically rigorous and professionally relevant, preparing you for careers that require interpersonal insight, commercial awareness and strategic thinking. The BSc (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management is a university-accredited undergraduate qualification awarded by Birmingham Newman University. While it does not currently offer exemptions from professional bodies such as the CIPD, it provides a strong foundation for further study or professional qualifications in areas such as human resource management, employment law and/or business leadership. The course is informed by current industry practice and shaped by feedback from employers and graduates.
