Birmingham Newman University is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Application Architect to lead the strategic direction, governance, and development of the University’s application estate.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the University’s digital future, ensuring our systems and integrations are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned to institutional priorities.
Reporting to the Deputy Director of Digital & IT Services, the successful candidate will lead the Application Team and act as the University’s design authority for application architecture. The role will oversee the development, integration, lifecycle management, and governance of a broad portfolio of enterprise applications and platforms, including SaaS solutions, web systems, databases, and integration services.
The postholder will work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders across the University to deliver strategic application and integration roadmaps, reduce technical debt, improve service resilience, and support innovation. The role will also contribute significantly to the development and delivery of the University’s data strategy and cyber security approach for application services.
We are looking for a technically strong and collaborative leader with significant experience in application architecture, enterprise integration, and technical leadership within complex environments. You will have strong knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, system design, APIs, databases, and application security, alongside experience managing or leading technical teams and balancing operational delivery with strategic priorities.
The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and influence decision-making at senior levels. Experience of working within ITIL-aligned environments, strong problem-solving capability, and a passion for technology and continuous improvement are essential.
This role is primarily campus-based at Birmingham Newman University and will require occasional evening and weekend work to support key operational activities and institutional priorities.
